Dutchman Jan Willem de Vriend is the OBC’s principal guest conductor, as well as principal conductor of the Residentie Orkest in The Hague. Between 1982 and 2015 he was artistic director and violinist at the Combattimento Consort Amsterdam, an ensemble founded by him that achieved great success, particularly with regard to little-known works from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and the Dutch classical avant-garde repertoire.
The orchestras he has worked with include, among others, the South Netherlands Philharmonic, the Netherlands Symphony Orchestra, the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Flemish Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestre National de Lille, the Konzerthausorchester Berlin, the NDR Orchester, the Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra, the WDR Orchestra, the Tonhalle-Orchester, the Bergen Philharmonic and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Also worthy of mention is his involvement in operas based on works by Monteverdi, Handel, Telemann, Bach, Gassmann and Mozart, directed by the stage director Eva Buchmann; productions which toured extensively throughout Europe and North America.
