The Eroica Symphony marked a ‘before and after’ in orchestral music. The critics of the time did not understand that a symphony could last more than half an hour, that instruments could be used in such a forceful way or that expressive themes could be raised to another level (in fact, this would be the inception of ‘Romanticism’).
